Jackson Steeg left the NYPD with a disability pension but can't stay disabled. He hangs out with brother Dave, a minor criminal, in Hell's Kitchen, or at the local church where a former classmate is a nun who works with people at the very bottom of the social register.When faced with injustice and incompetence Steeg tends to go off the deep end and when Joanne, his nun friend, asks him to look into the murder of one of her charges, Steeg finds plenty of both. After doing his best to send the uncaring official police investigator of the murder off to get a disability pension of his own, Steeg unofficially takes over the case, which blossoms out into more than a single murder and more than someone simply preying on the helpless. It is a well-written, fast paced, excellent crime novel.

Parts of this story are very confusing to me and I consider myself to be pretty quick on the up take. The style is good, witty and easy to read. I had difficulty keeping all the characters straight, especially early on in the story. I really don't want to make a recommendation for or against. I almost feel it's my short coming somehow!
To me, characters drive a story, and this one goes full speed. What an interesting bunch of characters. They're all so three-dimensional. And I thoroughly enjoyed the dialogue--using as few words as possible to get the meaning across. Wish more writers used this technique. The only drawback is that the book could use a good punctuation edit. As an example, there are many misplacements of quotation marks.
Sorry, but this book was really slow when it came to action. I found it to be a bit too wordy and lacking suspense. By the time I was half way thorough, I was about ready to give up and move on to another book. However, since this book had received some pretty good reviews, I though maybe things would pick up in the second half, so I stuck with it. Sadly, it never. I think the story line was good, but could have been executed with more suspense and action.
The book was ok. I wouldn't buy any more of the books in the series. The book did not keep my interest. I figured out who the killer was and it was anti climatic. There are so many other authors that write suspense who in my opinion are much better, Lisa Gardner, Anne Frasier,Lisa Jackson, just to name a few.
This novel has interesting characters & a story.. At times it seemed a little slow moving.. But worth the read...
This book is terrific. It has great characters and a terrific plot. It’s head and shoulders above many of the thrillers I’ve read. I recommend this book highly.
The character of Jackson Steeg appears to be what the new cable series "Ray Donovan" modeled their character and the characters family members on. While there is some difference in the characters - they are more alike than different. Each is capable of cruelty and great generosity. Both are battling demons from their past, and both have family members who they'd rather forget about.
Well written, good sense of place - I'll be looking up some more of Mr. Berkowitz's writing, and am glad he got bored when he retired from the advertising business. It's an interesting read that kept my attention throughout the book, and that's not so easy to do.
